“Do-It-Yourself Ear Training”

During the COVID pandemic, I authored an ear training book—a challenging topic for me because, like anyone, I can always improve my own ear. In many ways, I wrote it as a practice manual and guide for myself. My goal was to create a “how-to” book focused on practice and motivation. When Hal Leonard launched their “Do-It-Yourself” series, it turned out to be a perfect fit.

I wanted this book to emphasize listening and approaching ear training from an experiential perspective, not just running drills. While disciplined practice is essential—sitting in the chair and doing the work—I also wanted to explore how to make that process enjoyable and deeply engaging. How can we motivate ourselves to embrace the journey of truly hearing?

To that end, I included meditations to encourage listening in a calm, reflective state. The book begins with a discussion on how we learn and hear, moving into vision and goal-setting to create a foundation for success. It also provides a structured template for learning. Along the way, readers will find plenty of exercises and inspiring quotes to keep them motivated.

This book is designed not just to improve skills but to foster a love for the art of listening and the joy of discovery.
